Winter Wind by rvwalker

Winter Wind

Winter still packs a punch here in the Bear Lake Valley. A series of snowstorms blew through here yesterday with very strong winds. The soft appearance at ground level is caused by snow blowing across the surface. I loved the dramatic clouds and the rapidly changing light!

Thanks for all your attention and great comments. I was surprised and pleased to find this one on the Popular Page.
Love this moody shot. Great lines and curve into the shot with that fab fenceline. Fav!!!

Ross, WOW! For so many reasons I love this photo. Great composition. Good choice on the fence line running out of the bottom right and curving back into the scene. But what is really awesome is how the drift emulates the curve of the fence on the left side of the scene. Even the clouds have a parabolic shape that mirrors the curves of the fence and drift. The light is dramatic and perfect. The trees carry a slight mistiness probably from snow blowing in front or off of the tree? But it makes them slightly mysterious. Just an amazing shot. FAV

AND, I wanted to say that if you wanted to make this photo a little more dark in composition, I would consider cropping out the top 1/4 or so but keeping the width of the photo. The crop line would be just above or near the top of the left cloud, but maybe just below the puffy white cloud begins in the top right corner. It would look kind of like a panorama shot that way, and would read very dark, but almost like cinema.

Great shot!

Another fav, Ross! What gorgeous scenes you've been posting, and this one is no exception. Beautiful lighting and leading line.
February 20th, 2014
FABULOUS. Such an appearance of moodiness in the sky and clouds, but the opposite the way the wind is whipping over the snow. The fence is at a great angle ion the photo. NICE.

@adambralston Thanks for the fav and the great comments, Adam. The softness is due to snow blowing along the ground. In fact, I made a short video that looks like the ground is squirming. The soft curve on the left is the plowed berm of a road, again softened by blowing snow flowing over the edge. I considered a panoramic crop but didn't want to lose the curve of the high cloud or the light shining through the backlit snow in the upper right.

@mccarth1 Thanks for the fav, Kerry. Yes, I have a 4WD truck. http://365project.org/rvwalker/365/2013-09-26. This place wasn't too challenging, though, because the road was frozen and the snow blew right off it in the strong wind. This was on the edge of town about a mile from home.
