Elk Herd by rvwalker

Elk Herd

This was taken from my deck this morning. Almost every winter, an elk herd appears briefly on the hilltop just east of town, and this one has been here for a couple of days. They are at least a mile away, and the photo was taken with a 500mm lens then heavily cropped. To the naked eye, they look like clumps of sagebrush, so most people who don't live here wouldn't notice them. Even so, it is great fun for me to spot them and attempt a photo.
Great find and capture.

Wow, that must be quite a lens! Great shot. I'll never get used to your beautiful blue skies. Love the gentle curve of the hilltop and the simplicity and contrast of the 3 colors.

Very interest shot and decent clarity considering the distance.

This is a nice herd! We don't see them where I live, but we are really familiar with elk - we see them in Colorado all the time when we go visit our daughter's family.

Cool herd! Thanks for the wildlife Ross.

How brilliant to live somewhere where you have such wildlife all around you. I would definitely buy a 500mm lens too if I lived there! Wonderful photo.

Fabulous! Love the blue sky!

What a huge herd and lovely curve of the hill to emphasize them

Holy Elk! Wow we don't get to see something like that on east coast. Love the way the darkness of the elk divide the blue sky from the snow.

Awesome -- so amazing to see this from your deck, however far away they might be. Great lens (and steady hand!).

@moxy @mccarth1 @macromover @dejongdd @adambralston @shepherdmanswife @homeschoolmom @jgpittenger @dgrynn @taffy Thanks, everyone. I am so lucky to be in an area with sights like this. The lens is an ancient Sigma 170-500 zoom and really isn't as sharp as I would like. The camera was on a sturdy tripod with a ball head and was triggered with a remote. The output was tweaked slightly with Sharpener Pro 3. Even so, there was some vibration from the wind and my second story deck, so multiple photos were taken so that I could find one that was reasonably sharp.

great capture. Nicely done.

Wonderful shot, I would notice them - amazing and illusive animals, so fun to see even from this distance.

I love it, what an amazing photo and the fact that it came out so clear after cropping it so much. It is beautiful to see the contrast of them and the snow, really makes them show up.

What a sight from your backdoor! Very well captured at the distance.

What a great view you have. Love this!
February 25th, 2014
Wow, there are so many of them! And seen right from your own window :)

@kbird61 @libertylady @sansjuan @darsphotos @pflaume @tango @lily Thanks, everyone. I never get tired of the wonderful and unexpected things that turn up around here.

Almost looks like they are on the moon - very cool shot!

Great photo, fascinating information.
February 25th, 2014
Considering everything, this is brilliant!

This must have been quite a sight to see. Sometimes the photo is much more about capturing the moment, which you have done beautifully here, than the technique.

Beautiful Winter scene.

@soboy5 @ivan @monkeykid @falcon11 @rangerxenos Thanks, everyone. The elk were gone this morning. I'm glad they stayed around as long as they did.

well isn't that something....what a treat

@roadshow I never get tired of things like this, and every morning the hills look different. Thanks for your comment.

A very striking shot. Your air must be so clean that there is no noise from such a distance. Superbly focussed, another fav for me.
February 28th, 2014
@seanoneill Thanks for the fav, Sean. Our high altitude keeps us above the smog and inversions, and our low population decreases pollution, so our air is often crystal clear.

@rvwalker nice to know places like that still exist Ross. Ben's friend Billy loved this and your owl shot.

@seanoneill I'm glad Billy liked this, Sean. I remember checking out his fine web site a couple of weeks ago.

@sassik Thanks, Sassik. The herd returned yesterday, and I never get tired of watching them, even at a distance.
