Floodgate by rvwalker

Floodgate

This wheel controls a floodgate on the Rainbow Canal that diverts water from Bear River to Bear Lake. My 10 mm lens creates interesting distortion, and I thought it made a pretty good subject for black and white Wednesday.

Tessa asked to see the color version, so I've posted it here. Which do you prefer? http://365project.org/rvwalker/photo-extras/2014-03-05
Nice b&w and great comp

very nice but I would like to see it in colour to compare the 2

I like it better in black and white.

I prefer the b&w to the colour :)

My eye is drawn to the very cool reflection just behind the spirals.

@cassiejoy Thanks for both favs, Cassie. It has been fun reading the comments on both of these.

@kbird61 @tesssa @nicolecampbell @darylo Thanks, everyone. So far the color version seems to have a slight popularity edge, but I prefer the B&W.

I like the b&w better. Nice composition.

Nice, well done on keeping horizon level with that 10mm lens. Prefer colour version.

for possibly the first time ever... I prefer the B&W! In the colour version, I find the reflection of the tree directly above the bolt thread, a distraction... in the B&W version, I never even noticed it till I compared the 2 images!

Also, the B&W has stronger contrasts!

Definitely prefer the b&w, great shot

Great shot. I think I like the color one better. Hard to decide.

@johenn @ivan @soboy5 @moxy @monkeykid Thanks, everyone. It looks like the color version got a few more favs, but I appreciate all your comments, and am glad some like the B&W best. I'm especially glad I could convince you, Therese!

great shot. I personally like the bw version better but both are nice.

I like the black and white better. Both have a unique point of view and an interesting composition.

@libertylady @falcon11 Thank you, Alice and Allison. I'm glad you like the B&W.

Definitely prefer the b&w. I thought the color could be interesting to up the saturation on the rusty part of the wheel, though.

Nice contrast of geometry in the wheel control and the natural scene beyond. Yeah for BWW!

@taffy @pflaume Thanks, Taffy and Lisa. The color version got more favs, but the B&W more positive comments. Go figure.

Wow, what a gorgeous shot, Ross. I love all the details and reflections you captured. I do like the color photo more than this one.

Thanks for the favs, Darlene. I think the B&W got a few more positive comments, but the color version got more favs.

@rvwalker That is interesting. I left my fav above on this one as I originally fav's it. I really like the one in color more. It shows so much more detail in my opinion. I am by no means saying this is not a wonderful photo as it is just like the color one better. To have places like this to take photos and to live where you do gives you beautiful photo ops.
