Baby Moose by rvwalker

Baby Moose

CW. Where's his mother? This little moose looks like he's too young to be on his own. I watched him try to get over the fence, and he couldn't do it, so he laid down in the grass next to it. I probably could have gotten closer, but he was stressed, and ran every time a truck drove by, so I decided to leave him alone.
Wild animals in the parks, like Yellowstone and Grand Teton, have become used to people, and we can often get close. Out here, the animals are much more difficult to approach and photograph.
Ross, this is a real ahhhhh shot! It was good to leave him be, I think.

Oh wow, he does look too young to be without his mother. A wonderful capture. Hopefully he will find mom soon.

It's great to see shots from around the world. Never seen a baby moose before and love this. Hope he got sorted.

Oh, fabulous capture! I saw a baby moose with its mother when I visited Algonquin Park last October...such an amazing sight to see them in the wild. I hope mum returns soon!

Interesting image. Life in the wild!

Oh my gosh, I want a baby moose. What a sweet creature. Thanks for sharing!

He looks too young to be out on his own. i hope he is ok.
April 17th, 2014
I hope his Mom comes back, I'm worried for him.

What I like about this (other than how cool it is to be able to see this in real life), is the way you've processed the image. The soft focus, with the sharp color contrast for the baby moose, is really effective. It all looks so innocent.

What an awesome capture, poor little guy, hope his mamma comes looking for him, what a sweet face he has.
Great shot as always Ross.

This is a wonderful shot, Ross. I hope this little one will be ok.

Poor thing. I hope he found his mother. It was good of you to let him be. I'd crop 1/4" off of the right and bottom edges so you lose that dark bit of fence. Then your eye would go right to the sweet baby.

Nice shot and fun capture! Hope he finds him momma!
April 18th, 2014
Ohh, he is cute but he does look stressed. I hope he finds Mom and is ok. Very cool capture, wonderful shot.

@quietpurplehaze @moxy @macromover @vfox @ivan @amandal @soboy5 @trinda @taffy @skippysue @darsphotos @falcon11 @kbird61 @sansjuan Thanks, everyone. I hope he is OK too. The softness in the moose is probably caused by movement. The image was cropped quite a bit, including removal of a bright red Stop sign in the background.

Wow! What a great find and capture! I love moose! Hope he finds his momma!
April 18th, 2014
Lovely shot, but I hope his mother comes for him. He looks lost - credit to the photographer, though! You live in a very visual environment... so lucky!

Oh, poor baby. I hope he finds Mama soon. Nicely captured. I like the uneven fence and the color accent of the road. It would be interesting to live where you see wild animals like this all the time. All we get are coyotes.

A fantastic capture!

I'm glad you were thoughtful and didn't stress this youngster more. Poor thing I hope he finds his mother. I have always wanted to see a moose in the wild but so far no luck. Are people allowed to hunt moose there? My only suggestion might be to darken some of the lighter areas a bit to draw the eye toward the moose. Nice catch!

Many times distance is the best answer. Nice Shot.
April 18th, 2014
Poor thing. I hope his mother came along eventually. Lovely shot.

Such a large size for a baby but I do know they get large. I actually like the fence the way it goes up and down at different heights.
April 18th, 2014
a beautiful capture! He is so cute, hope he finds his mom soon! :)
April 18th, 2014
Cool composition as always. Little guy needs water.

@exposure4u @rosiekerr @aglennc @leananiemand @hollandcrew @gailmmeek @tesssa @monkeykid @adambralston Thanks, everyone. I told the field owner about the moose, and when I went by this morning the gate was open and the moose was gone. I don't know if he found Mom.

@mccarth1 Thanks for the suggestion, Kerry. See above for an update. Yes, moose are hunted here, but only after being drawn in a lottery and buying a special tag. Very few are issued. After drawing a tag, the hunter is no longer eligible for the rest of his life, whether he gets one or not.

@rvwalker I think it's the same way for bear?
April 19th, 2014
Poor baby. I hope he's okay. Great capture!
April 19th, 2014
Nope. In Idaho you can apply for a second tag in the same year if you get a bear.
April 19th, 2014
@johenn Thanks, Jo. I know he was able to get out of the field, but don't know if he found Mom.
April 19th, 2014
neat. I have never seen a baby moose. He is quite gangly.
April 19th, 2014
@rvwalker Lots more bears I guess?
April 19th, 2014
@adambralston Not here in the valley, Adam, but there are areas north of here where bear hunting is common. The pioneers pretty much wiped out the bear population in the Bear Lake Valley, but they are making a comeback. A friend of mine had a bear run full speed through the middle of their 50th wedding anniversary party!

Bob
Nice capture of this detached critter.
April 19th, 2014
@libertylady @bobhuegel Thank you Alice and Bob. There is something special about seeing moose. They are one of my favorite animals.
April 19th, 2014
@rvwalker That's one way to celebrate. Somebody probably thought it was a gag joke.
April 19th, 2014
What a lovely capture!! I hope he found his mom!!
April 21st, 2014
What a sight! Great capture!
April 22nd, 2014
@pamknowler @pflaume Thanks, Pam and Lisa. The gate was open and he was gone the next morning.
April 22nd, 2014
I'm actually more drawn to the fence with its haphazard patterns! But it makes the moose that much more iinteresting. Love it.
April 26th, 2014
@darylo I like the fence too, but it sure confined the little guy. I was glad to see he had escaped the next day.
