The Day of the Terrifics

This grand cru amaryllis was given to me as a Christmas present from my mom. She likes giving me plants and such even though it's not really my interest. On opening (after the huge anticlimax of a realising the heavy, interesting looking box contained a plant), I briefly saw that It was a dry bulb that you plant in the supplied pebbles, then lightly water for it to flower in the spring. I put it under the desk unopened and to be honest, forgot completely about it.

Some time later, during an innocent phone call, Mum mentioned how the amaryllis was getting on, was it in flower yet? What amaryllis? Oh, the bulb thing. I told her that I hadn't started planting it yet, but intended to soon. That was something of a mistake.

Exasperated cries of, "You've Killed it! It's dead. Dead." and
"It was an expensive one! I can't believe you haven't even watered it! I'll have it back. Next time I call, I'm taking it home with me to nurse in my greenhouse."

"I'll have it back!" is a phrase I often associate with certain plants.

During the said phone call, I did have a little observational glance at it through the cardboard. It had grown a couple of shoots in the darkness under the desk and even without water was looking quite perky I felt. What was all the fuss about. It was still alive I assured her more than once. After the phone call, I decided to pot it up, and this is the result. It lives. It not only lives, it's looking nicely in bloom. Perhaps, on reflection because it's glad for the opportunity. Well, we won't go there.

I can understand your chagrin. Fancy seeing Grand Cru only find out it was an Amaryllis and not a Moet Chandon!

Such a funny tale & typical of mums to give a plant they would probably like themselves...have done it myself , not a plant but a present . To be truthful what on earth do you buy you men & I think you secretly like it now it has flowered. a very fine specimen so you must have done something right!

How incredible, it looks in remarkably good health, despite its poor start. Phew you got off lightly!! Nice shot btw.

That sentence "I'll HAVE IT BACK" Cracked me up. Since I can clearly hear your mum's voice.

Some plants do a whole lot better when they're left to their own devices rather than being carefully tended .
I like the angle - gives you a good idea of its height. Lovely rich red.

Now you must convince your Mom that you didn't go out and buy a new one just to make her feel better.

Your mom makes me think of mine. Even at my age, I'm still a little scared of her. :0)
