How does one know it´s young? I am curious. Those are so magnificent and majestetic animals!
April 1st, 2015
@susale Suse, it is partly their overall size and then the size of their tusk, in it's length and diameter.

@salza Oh I see, thank you!

@susale when I have finally worked through l the pictures tht I took I will no doubt have some pictures of older bull elephants which will illustrate the larger tusk.

Such gorgeous, mammoth animals! I envy you your easy ability to go and see them, assumingly not far from home! Your photos is wonderful, and with the explanation you gave Suse, I can see what you're saying!

Lovely pic. Are you in the Addo again?
April 2nd, 2015
@ericdibosco sadly already home, we had an afternoon, two full days and a short morning session in the park. Wish that we lived closer. I could spend all year visiting Addo!
April 2nd, 2015
@Weezilou Louise we are about 8 hours drive from the Addo Elephant Park. We try to visit about every 18 months although we were last there nearly 3 years ago!

Great shot- It always amazes me that for their size they basically eat plants! I love how much detail you've captured here.

Great capture, looks pensive
April 3rd, 2015
@olivetreeann another thing that amazes me with elephants is how quite they are. When one or even a herd walks by their footsteps are almost silent!
April 3rd, 2015
Beautiful capture !!
April 4th, 2015
@salza My guess is that the reason they step so quietly is because of their wide feet- the weight is more evenly dispersed over them. Just a guess!
April 4th, 2015
its ear look torn and there's even a small hole? for tagging perhaps? very nice capture of the details of its face.
April 4th, 2015
@summerfield interestingly the small tears, nicks and holes on their ears are used to help identify the individual elephants. They get these nicks and holes either through fighting or from the vegetation that they live in.
