Seems that caricatures of well-known personalities and especially politicians are a common occurance at the Acireale Carnival. In Malta, politicians are very touchy and caricatures like these may get you into trouble. Very recently, though, the Maltese Minister responsible for these festivities has openly declared that it was government intention not only to allow but also to promote political satyr. Malta is a very small state and has two main political parties. The population is divided almost in half between them and the parties have to ‘fight tooth and nail’ to acquire the necessary number of votes to win an election. Elections in Malta are held every five years in a very democratic way, I have to say. Real fighting between opposing supporters are very very rare nowadays even during election time when election fever is very high.
