July 20th. This was the penultimate day of our fabulous vacation. We passed the day at Montenvers and Chamonix. It was a great. We took the mountain train up to Montenvers Station, situated 1913 metres above sea level. This is the view we saw from a small square before we descended to the bottom of the valley. What you see down there is a glacier, called Mer de Glace (Sea of Ice) which is born near Mont Blanc and descends for 2500 metres. It is 7 kilometres long and is the largest glacier in France and the third largest in the Alps. The average thickness of the ice is 200 metres, exceeding 400 metres in some place.
Many thanks for looking and for your lovely comments on yesterday's picture.
