A lookout facing Grand Harbour on the bastions of Fort St Michael in Senglea.
Fort St Michael was one of three forts defending the Knights’ stronghold in Grand Harbour during the 1565 siege by the vastly superior forces of the Ottoman Turks. The other two were Fort St Elmo and Fort St Angelo. Fort St Elmo fell, but Fort St Michael withstood the siege, though massively damaged; the scene of some of the most desperate fighting of the siege. It withstood 10 assaults from the Ottoman Turkish attackers.
Fort St Michael is at the tip of l-Isla. The fortified city that was developed with Fort St Michael at its tip was called Citta’ Invicta (the unconquered city) after the success in the siege and subsequently given the name of Senglea after Grand Master Claude de la Sengle. Most of Senglea was badly damaged by aerial bombing during the second world war as it was very close to the British naval dockyard. The impressive seaward bastions of Senglea remain, however, heir to Fort St Michael's original site and purpose.
Thank you so very much for looking and for your wonderful comments and fav’s on yesterday’s picture.
i like when photographers take a photo from a different perspective or one that is not expected - love the color of the sky - and of course, enjoy reading about the history of Malta - thanks Dione
