The Middle Sea Race, sponsored by Rolex which started last Saturday. The yachts had to travel some 700 nautical miles around the central part of the Mediterranean, setting off from Malta (the organiser) and ending in Malta.
This is a close-up shot of some of the yachts immediately they heard the gunshot boom for the start of the race. I was on the Senglea side of the harbour from where I had a fabulous view of the goings on.
The Rolex Middle Sea Race, organised by the Royal Malta Yacht Club, is a highly rated offshore classic. The race is a true challenge to skippers and crews who have to be at their very best to cope with the often changeable and demanding conditions. Equally, the race is blessed with unsurpassed scenery with its course, taking competitors close to a number of islands, which form marks of the course.
This year, the race attracted over 100 yachts of different sizes and categories. Yachts started their adventure in small groups every 10 minutes according to the category they were competing in. The start was set off by the firing an empty shot from one of the cannons at the saluting battery just below the Upper Barrakka in Valletta.
