“Il-Mensija” is the Maltese word for ‘the forgotten’. This is the area where I live, around 3 minutes walk from this chapel which is also named “Il-kappella tal-Mensija” - Chapel of The Forgotten. It is situated in a quiet area on the outskirts of San Gwann. My first thought was to clean the picture from the power lines but on a closer look I liked how they almost lead your eyes to the setting sun.
The area takes its name from the Chapel which is dedicated to the Annunciation and to St Leonard. The chapel was built in 1572 in a rural area and originally dedicated to St Leonard, protector of slaves. It is partly built in a rock-cut cave and during the period 1636-1690 it was completely forgotten. It is, perhaps, for this reason that the chapel together with its surroundings became known as “tal-Mensija”. Dominating a small square in front of the chapel is a statue of The Annunciation of Mary. You can see the silhouette with the halo around the head.
Thank you all very much for looking and for your lovely comments on yesterday’s picture. I will not have internet access for the next week and so I wish you all, in anticipation, a Happy Easter full of love and blessings.
The buildings look very nice captured as the sun is setting, very interesting history lesson thank you Dione. I like the power lines as they do indeed lead to the setting sun. Happy easter to you too! Look forward to your return.
Beautiful capture of the sunset and the silhouettes of the church and buildings . Thanks for the interesting history. so we become to know a lot more of Malta and her history.
