They say that the best pizzas are cooked in ovens heated by natural log fires. Probably this is very true. This is a shot of the log fire of the restaurant where we went for a pizza on the first evening of our stay in Tuscany.
Today, the Catholic Church celebrates the feast of the Assumption (to heaven) of The Virgin Mary. In Malta it is a public holiday. There are 12 parishes around Malta and Gozo dedicated to Mary under this title that celebrate their festa today. Yesterday, on the eve, you could hear fireworks being let off from every direction. The feast is doubly important for us Maltese. First for the religious connotations and secondly because on this day Malta was saved from surrendering to axis forces in WWII when people were starving to death for lack of food and there were no more ammunitions left to defend the islands. On the feast of Santa Maria –as it is commonly known by Maltese – the first ship of a large convoy sent to relieve the battered Island entered harbour with the necessities, followed by others that managed to make it home after being bombarded throughout their journey. The operation to relieve Malta was called Operation Pedestal and was one of the largest carried out in the Mediterranean.
We are invited to Denise (my daughrter)’s house in Mosta this evening for a BBQ on their roof on the occasion of the town’s festa. From her roof we will be able to see the fireworks let off during the procession. I will be taking my camera with me to try to take some good shots.
