Second day of our Tuscany holiday. Please view large if you have time, thank you.
Forgive me for dwelling for so long on the same day’s captures but I took so many shots and in such a relatively small area of land that it’s hard to leave them all out. So, please, bear with me for two or three more shots from the day’s album.
This is a merge of several shots to show Piazza del Campo, the principal public space of the historic center of Siena. It is regarded as one of Europe's greatest medieval squares. The Palazzo Pubblico and its Torre del Mangia (on the right), as well as various palazzi signorili surround the shell-shaped piazza. At the northwest edge (middle of the photo) is the Fonte Gaia).
The palazzi signorili are houses built for the noble families of Siena.
Twice a year, the Palio of Siena is held in this square and is shown on many tv stations worldwide. Thousands of people throng to the piazza to watch this 2 minute event in person. The event is a a race between 10 jockeys riding horses on bare-back (without saddles) They represent 10 ‘contrada’ (districts) of the city. There are actually 17 contradas but there is only place for 10 in the race and the contradas taking part are selected by drawing lot. I was here on one of the days when the palio was held but didn’t watch the race. However we had time to admire the long defile with knights on horseback, knights in armour and their dames and entourage all dressed in beautiful period costumes.
Thank you very much for looking and for your lovely comments and fav’s on my previous postings.
Great panoramic view of this beautiful square. great processing to.
