Taking up my picture-narrative of our Tuscany holiday – day 4.
Most of our day was passed in San Gimignano – practically lazying around this medieval town. This is the cathedral dedicated to St. Geminianus. Next to it partly seen is the Torre Grossa, the highest of the San Gimignano towers.
The church was closed to visitors – it being Sunday and the feast of Santa Fina – the patron saint of the town – but we managed to get in for a few minutes on the pretext of saying a prayer (which we did). The fact that we couldn’t tour the church didn’t bother me much as I had done this 4 years ago on our first visit to the place.
The church is famous for its fresco cycles which include works by Domenico Ghirlandaio, Benozzo Gozzoli, Taddeo di Bartolo, Lippo Memmi and Bartolo di Fredi. It was consecrated on 21 November 1148. During the 13th, 14th and 15th centuries, the church was enriched by the addition of the frescos, sculpture and other additions. It was damaged during World War II.
With regard to yesterday’s video – yes, I was close to the fireworks like many more people but their were policemen not to let us get too close. Besides those fireworks are harmless.
Thank you very much for looking and for your lovely comments.
