A week ago we went to L-Isla (derived from the Italian word l’isola meaning island). This is a city on an isthmus of land jutting out in Grand Harbour. The city is also known as Senglea for Grand Master Claude de La Sengle from the French Langue who ruled between 1553 and his death in 1557. It also has the title of Citta’ Invicta (Unconquered city) for its role during the unsuccessful Ottoman attempt to capture Malta in 1565.
There is a lovely promenade along Dockyard Creek where we had a snack in an open air restaurant. This shot, besides the boats on the water, shows Fort St Angelo at the tip of Birgu (floodlit) and in the distance Valletta.
Joke: This newly-wed couple decided to go to the seaside for their vacation. With all their spending on their wedding they were a bit tight on money so they found this small family run hotel for their stay. They walked to the reception counter to ask about the charges. The landlady behind the counter said, 'We charge twenty pounds a night, bed and breakfast- or twelve pounds if you make your own bed.' 'Oh, all right,' the young couple said together, 'We'll make the bed.' And the landlady gave them a saw, a hammer and some nails.
Thank you very much for looking and for the wonderful comments and the many fav and for putting yesterday's shot on pp.
