Another shot (from the Lower Barracca) from my walkabout in Valletta.
Who would have dared scale those city walls especially when the defenders would be up there waiting to push you back to a certain death or throwing anything at you while you climbed?
When Valletta was built in the 16th century after Malta, led by the Order of St John, had repelled the mighty invasion by Ottoman Turks, the Order wanted their new city to be impregnable. And so the first thing they did was to surround the city with massive fortified walls. And they succeeded because Valletta was never attacked from land or sea.
Below the city walls are warehouses which were built in later years when the possibility of attacks had receded.
Many thanks for viewing and for the comments and fav's on yesterday's picture
This place is so impressive and even though they are unnecessary now, the walls still look impregnable! I love the black and white almost sepia tone treatment of this photo. fav
