Day 7 of our Sorrento holiday.
Amalfi, nestled under the high cliffs that surround it. Took these shots from a boat as we had a boat trip along the coast - not as spectacular as our boat trip around Capri.
Amalfi was the capital of the Duchy of Amalfi, an important trading power in the Mediterranean between 839 and around 1200. It rivalled Pisa and Genoa in its domestic prosperity and maritime importance. Amalfitan war-galleys were among the largest to be found in the Mediterranean during the Early Middle Ages. In 1135 and 1137, it was taken by the Pisans and rapidly declined in importance. A final blow to its importance came when a tsunami destroyed the port and lower town in 1343. Amalfi never recovered from the blow.
Amalfi is included in the UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
