Official Remembrance Day commemorations last Sunday began with High Mass at St John’s Cathedral in Valletta followed by the laying of wreaths at the Spencer Monument, in Floriana, today considered as the War Memorial.
I decided to go watch some of the activity and at the same time take some shots. I took this shot early in the morning before people began to take up vantage points to watch the proceedings at the War Memorial.
About the Spencer Monument. It was erected in memory of Robert Cavendish Spencer son of George Spencer, 2nd Earl Spencer. He served as private secretary to King William IV from 1827 to 1828, and was knighted for his services. He had a distinguished career in the Royal Navy. He died in Malta aged 39 on board his ship, HMS Madagascar, while in quarantine in Malta in November 1830.
Originally located at Corradino Hill the monument was first moved to the top of Spencer Hill in 1893 where it was struck by lightning in 1975 and suffered considerable damage; however it was later restored to its original glory. It was again moved this time to its present location to make way for new traffic arrangements.
I am very excited today. My granddaughter, Michaela, will be giving a show together with a troupe from Stagecoach (Malta) at Her Majesty’s Theatre in London (I am told that in this theatre “The Phantom of the Opera” has been showing for many years – I’ve been to see it myself). And Michaela has two solo parts in the performance.
Many thanks for all your views, comments and favs. Always much appreciated.
Lovely peaceful image of the War Memorial. It is indeed where Phantom has been running for many years, good luck Michaela and fellow performers, you must be a very proud grandfather Dione 🎦
Hope the performance goes well for your granddaughter, how lovely. I know that theatre very well and yes, Phantom has been there for a long time. A friend of mine used to work there on the lighting. I like this picture - the flags all in line is lovely.
A super shot and interesting narrative. I checked out the Spencer name, and as I thought, they were ancestors of the late Princess Diana, who's ancestral home, Althorpe, is only a couple of miles from here
Congratulations to your granddaughter. She must be very talented.
Huge congrats to Michaela
Well done, Michaela, too, how exciting!
