5th day of our Portugal holiday of last Easter.
This is a merge of two shots of the church of the Jerónimos Monastery. I posted one or two shots of the inside of this church on our first visit when we had to skip our visit to the monastery because of the long queue. This shot is, however, from the balcony of the church which we couldn’t visit the other day.
Vasco da Gama, 1st Count of Vidigueira, the famed, Portuguese explorer, and his men spent the night in prayer in this very church before departing on their expedition to the Orient in 1497. Da Gama was the first European to reach India by sea. His initial voyage to India (1497–1499) was the first to link Europe and Asia by an ocean route, connecting the Atlantic and the Indian oceans and therefore, the West and the Orient.
Thank you so much for looking and for the comments and fav’s on yesterday’s picture.
