Last week my brother and I went to Valletta precisely to visit this place.
Malta has, since time immemorial suffered from lack of adequate rain and it's first consideration has been how to have a reserve of rain to fall on. So when in 1565 it was decided to build a new city, later to be called Valletta, every possibility was taken to make sure adequate supply of water would be available. This is one of a series of underground cistern, cut in the rock to collect rain water. You can make out the size of this cistern by comparing it to the size of the people on the far end of this picture. I was amazed when we went down there. There are also tree roots that have penetrated the rocks looking for water.
Today, although conserving rain water is still a priority, we have reverse-osmosis plants which transform sea water into good drinking water but this is at a big cost.
Many thanks for al your views and comment as well as the fav's on yesterday's picture.
