KAROZZIN IN THE SHADE by sangwann

KAROZZIN IN THE SHADE

As Max and I entered Mdina, Sunday before last, we saw this karozzin waiting in the shade of this tree and I thought it made a lovely picture.
There has been a polemic in Malta these last days on whether horse-drawn karozzini should be banned from our roads. This was as a result of a horse pulling a karozzin falling dead in the middle of the road. A few days later another horse fell dead. Those against argued that the deaths were caused by hard work in the hot summer months. I joined the fray on facebook by commenting against this ban. My argument was that karozzini, or historic horse-drawn cabbies could be found all around Europe, and there are other hot countries like Malta in Europe. I argued that protesters should put pressure on the authorities to make sure adequate regulations be in place to protect the horse throughout the year and that they should make sure these regulations are strictly observed. Later the biggest of the two political parties in opposition came out with my same proposal.
Many thanks for looking, for your views and fav's on yesterday's picture.
A wonderful shot and such a pity if they would be forbidden. It surely is up to the owners to make sure that their horses are well looked after and also have time to rest.

It would be a shame if this lovely image was lost because some owners are not taking very good care of their horses.

There is a lovely little harbour village called Polperro not too far from us. There had always been horse drawn 'trams' to take the visitors down to the harbour. The village streets are way too narrow for the amount of summer traffic, so there is a large car park at the top of the village. The horses stood waiting in a large 'shed' near to the car park....then took the visitors down and returned back with people returning. This had been going on ever since I can remember. This was stopped a few years ago because some folk thought it was too much for the horses. As far as I could see they were well looked after and much loved. It as a shame as it was part of the local culture and the visitors loved them....hope yours stay....

They tried the same thing in NYC with the horse-drawn carriages that go around Central Park. It's absurd to think someone who makes a living with the horse would actually want to harm it. Good shot. Your proposal makes a lot of sense too.
