Day 1 of our Rome holiday - Trastevere.
Every couple of metres you will find a church in Rome and each one is more beautiful than the other. In the last days of our holidays I could not bear to go into any more churches after all those I had seen. To make sure I don’t mix the names of the churches I have taken a picture of a notice or sign in or outside each church showing the name.
This is a shot inside the Basilica of Santa Maria in Trastevere. According to different sources on the net, it was commissioned by Pope Callistus I and founded during the third century, when Christianity was not yet widely accepted.
The church is nestled in a quiet corner of Trastevere's focal square and is said to be the oldest church dedicated to the Virgin Mary in Rome.
If you look closely at this picture the mosaic in the apse, shows Christ and his mother flanked by various saints. With them, on the far left, is Pope Innocent II holding a model of the church.
Thanks for looking, for your comments and for the fav's.
I've actually heard of Trastevere...You are in the best place to see all these churches...let alone cathedrals! We are lucky that you are such a good photographer - no blurs and no solid dark places. There is a dark place here- think it might be dark wood. Not easy to get the whole lot illuminated! fav
Gorgeous. I do that too - take a photo of the name of a place or I start scratching my head and wondering which is which when I get home. This really is very beautiful. I think of the hours of artistic work that went into making that......
This was my favourite church in Rome. Full of beautiful mosaics, it was so richly decorated. We were allowed to go in & visit in the evening but not for Mass for some reason, you might have been luckier than us. I must have another look at my photos, lovely to be reminded of our special holiday. Thank you.
