wide spread panic!

155 / 365
I got a chuckle out of the Radio City Music Hall marquee today. July 22nd promised "Wide Spread Panic", though things looked pretty normal to me. New Yorkers are hard to shake up though. I can only think of 2 instances in the 15 years I've lived here where widespread panic ruled. September 11th being the first (and one of the worst, most panic-induced days of my life). The second was a few years later when a heat wave caused a huge city-wide blackout that lasted for days. (Although for the heat wave, after the initial panic New Yorkers actually turned the situation into a giant party, sharing food, gathering on rooftops and hanging out. Power was out for multiple days...)

We stayed at the Hilton Motel just a block or so up from Radio City Music Hall, so this photo brings back memories, too, Sarah. I don't think I would want to be in NYC when there was truly widespread panic. It's wonderful that everyone pulled together, though, in both instances you have mentioned. Some time I would be interested in hearing your own personal story about Sept. 11th, since you were right there. I wish this site had a way of personal messaging each other. Is your new job near where you took these photos?

Yeah, I work right across the street from Radio City Music Hall. A bustling area to work for sure.

I was in Brazil during that heat wave. Kept seeing images of NYC on tv again and again--there was obviously a problem but we couldn't understand the announcers and had no idea what it was.
