White Balance Challenge by sarahsthreads

White Balance Challenge

For the camera settings challenge to explore white balance.

Top left: white fluorescent. Seemed like the best bet, considering this was directly underneath a fluorescent ceiling fixture.
Top right: tungsten. Much cooler, not an accurate color match.
Bottom left: auto. I actually like this warmer look a lot. I think the reality might be somewhere in between fluorescent and whatever temperature auto picked.
Bottom right: custom WB using a gray card. If I did this right, anyway. It's closest to the fluorescent, which is what I'd expect!
Nice job with this. Seems like these cameras do a really good job without the hassle of using a gee card.

Nice job, all of them look good.

@dmcoile Yes, I think they probably do, but I do keep the white balance on auto 99% of the time, I should probably be more aware of it.

Super cool study of the white balance feature! I just learned about it too and it's amazing how much difference it makes...

I'm surprised the gray card wasn't closest.

@samzee Me too - I'm not convinced I set it properly, to be honest. I tried it again under stage lights and the resulting photos were way too blue - I just wound up going back to auto for those!

@kerosene Thanks! I plan to try the outdoor options soon, too. It is nice to have some control when the camera isn't thinking properly. :)

Great shot for the exercise and I like the way you have presented them. It does illustrate the differences in settings. Not sure which I prefer but leaning towards the auto setting.
