The dairy farm

This little calf is 3 days old and the weaker of a pair of twins. The farmer told me that twins are often a problem as both are usually smaller and weaker than they should be at birth, and this little one was so thin and weak he didn't think it would make it. She couldn't even stand up on her own for the first couple of days, so they have been standing her up and supporting her, and feeding her small amounts frequently as she didn't want to feed. But today she is finally standing on her own, and was clearly very hungry sucking on my hands until her milk arrived.

We are privileged to have a milk shop - the kind where you can take your own bottles and have them filled with rich creamy milk straight from the farm. Near the end of last year when I was in the shop getting my bottles filled up, I happened to meet Farmer R and boldly asked if I could go to his farm to take photos. He said I could go out there between 3pm and 4pm and gave me his phone number, so today was the day I went. What a lovely afternoon. Getting out onto a real farm with a kind and caring farmer whose dairy cows are out grazing on grass, not being fed hormones, just made me feel so much happier and more contented.
bony little thing, but great to see the care - and great boldness rewarded!

Poor wee thing! Ditto what Justina said. You’re so lucky to have such a thing - fill your own bottles!

Poor thing it does look rather thin. Lovely close up.

Precious little thing, I hope he makes it! We definitely don’t have a source for fresh milk, that’s very unique.

Hope it survives!!
