Ben the Archer by seanoneill

Ben the Archer

As most of you know, Ben has a heart condition. This rather limits the types of sport he can take part in, and anything too aerobic that involves too much running is generally off limits.

He tried Archery on holiday in the summer, and also saw it at the Olympics (see other photos back in July and August), so we booked him on a beginner's course at our local club.

He passed the course with flying colours, so we bought him his own bow. He achieved his 10m badge last week, scoring 125 out of 150.

Here he is last night attempting his 15m badge. We'll try again for that next week!

Congratulations to Ben and good capture on your part.
He'll want this one framed.

Congrats, Ben - archery is a great sport!

Oh nice! Oskar likes the idea of this too. Tell me... with Ben's heart, if he went to Olympic level... would he be allowed to compete in the normal or would he be classed in the special because of his heart?

@cdonohoue @soboy5 @ozziehoffy Thank you all. I don't know Cassandra. My guess is normal Olympics, but I actually haven't a clue! As he has yet to shoot an apple of my head, i don't think he is Olympic standard yet!
December 13th, 2012
@seanoneill haha and would you let him shoot an apple off your head??
December 13th, 2012
Good job Ben!! What does 15m mean?? Is that good??? I bet so because you seem pretty proud.
December 13th, 2012
@centermd 15 metres away from the target. Yeah, I'm proud of everything my kids achieve.
December 13th, 2012
@ozziehoffy Maybe with a pea shooter ;)
December 13th, 2012
@seanoneill ROFL ... that would hurt from a distance if he hit too low :P
December 13th, 2012
@seanoneill WOW that is really good then!! tell him that I congragulate himm on his great accomplishment!
December 13th, 2012
@ozziehoffy Fortunately my 47 years of pastry and ale consumption have provided ample padding!
December 13th, 2012
@centermd I will Micah, cheers Top Man!! he will be pleased to receive them.
December 13th, 2012
@seanoneill LOL You are really making me laugh tonight. Ben and Oskar can go to the Olympics together... Ben in archery and Oskar in gymnastics.
December 13th, 2012
@ozziehoffy Great, we can have a few beers together then!!
December 13th, 2012
Great choice of sport :-)
December 13th, 2012
@seanoneill Well... if I find a beer I like.... otherwise I'll happily have Midori :) Would be pretty cool to have our kiddies go there huh!!
December 13th, 2012
@ozziehoffy It would be incredible. Add @kwind , Kim's son Gage is Canada's fastest swimmer in his age group! 2020 could be a 365 Olympics!!
December 13th, 2012
@gemtumble Cheers Gemma.
December 13th, 2012
@seanoneill Wow, that's so cool!! Must be a fish lol. Oh that would be a whole lot of fun.... not sure that Oskar would be old enough... do they have 13 year old boys in the gymnastics?

Heavenly days. . .Olympic sportsmen already?! Nonetheless, what a lovely thing to see that Ben has found his own niche in a sport where he can excel. . .and his form looks positively wonderful!!

Ben has picked a great sport!
My many years of archery were cut short on 2000 when my acoustic neuroma operation destroyed one balance canal.
Still miss it!
Looks like a nice indoor range - tell Ben to look forward to his first hit at 90 meters when he goes outdoors.
December 13th, 2012
Great shot ;-) I was only reading yesterday of a longbow making workshop and thinking I bet my lads would love that!
December 13th, 2012
Great shot! Good that he has found a sport he likes and that you encourage him.
December 13th, 2012
A great sport, the next Robin Hood :)
December 13th, 2012
Great shot!! I bet my son would love this!!
December 13th, 2012
I loathe indoor shooting like this, but outdoors in spring is wonderful. Seems like Ben's made a good start, and he should have a lifetime's worth of enjoyment ahead of him. As for the Olympics, as it happens I know a Paralympic archery gold medallist ... it's a full time job.
December 13th, 2012
Nice, I've tried archery a couple of times, looks a lot easier than it is...
December 13th, 2012
Fantastic bow! Lucky you, Ben! You certainly look the part!
December 13th, 2012
I have always been fasinated by the Bow and arrow...I had alot of friends that hunted with them when i was in my college years...This is a great sport for Ben! We will be looking for him in future Olympics! :)
December 14th, 2012
Team GB needs young athletes like Ben...... I'll watch out for him in a few years time on the gold medal podium!
December 14th, 2012
I tried firing a Papua New Guinean traditional Bow. Nearly lost a toe.
December 14th, 2012
@bobfoto now that made me smile, but I know someone who will laugh long and loud in the morning when I show him.
December 14th, 2012
@seanoneill - My second attempts were better, managed to fire a home made arrow through a banana tree using a hand made bow. They make and use some fine looking weapons over there!
December 14th, 2012
Nice shot - better not stand in his way!
December 16th, 2012
Great capture, and good luck on the 15 metre badge.
December 18th, 2012
Congrats to Ben. Archery seems to be becoming very popular. My brother's sons participate in archery at school. My brother is an artist as well as outdoorsman, and they sometimes use his handcarved bows.
