Today's word isn't .....trees

Today's word is Carnation. Now I love flowers, but I am really not a fan of carnations. Remind me of too many family weddings in the 1970s where my uncles tried to make me drink Double Diamond and eat vol-au-vents!!

So, off I walked up to the village at about 2pm to buy some Carnation evaporated milk to do a pop art pic. Turns out it isn't very popular anymore, so our Co-Op doesn't stock it. Never mind, I saw an old pal who has MS through the window of the coffee shop and popped in and had an enjoyable half an hour chatting to him. He doesn't get out much so it was good to see him.

Then, on my way home I spotted a little bit of residual flooding on the meadow, and bingo, today's shot is saturday's word. Watch this space for Carnation Pop Art!!

Lol, I've got some carnation in my cupboard you should have said ;-)
Great picture today though, beautiful reflections and colour :-)

Lovely colours and silhouettes Sean. Nicely processed.
January 3rd, 2013
I really love this, Sean...you rebel you...The colors, the contrast. Really nice. Fav!
January 3rd, 2013
Yuck... carnation milk! This is pretty spectacular Sean!
January 3rd, 2013
@gemtumble Thank you Gemma, I wish I'd known!!! Can you send it to me, and I'll send it back when I've photographed it lol!
January 3rd, 2013
@rwhite Thanks Rosie. Orton technique!
January 3rd, 2013
I spy Orton? Beautiful lighting and composition.
January 3rd, 2013
@amandalomonaco Thanks Amanda, Orton technique. I'm rather a fan and it is so easy!!!
January 3rd, 2013
@elsbels Cheers helen. Yeah, yuck, but it makes lovely cakes!!
January 3rd, 2013
@fueast Spot on, I nearly tagged you.....
January 3rd, 2013
Snap!! re. carnations!! Don't we love Orton!! all thanks to Alison..this is wonderful, really beautiful!
January 3rd, 2013
Fantastic photo Sean and worth replacing my guilty pleasure( carnation) ! I'll have to find out what the Orton technique is.
January 3rd, 2013
@fannyb haha, yep not a fan of carnations at all, but I do love Orton. Glad you like!
January 3rd, 2013
@ccb Thanks Celia, Its ever so easy, especially if you have Photoshop. http://theofenraven.wordpress.com/2012/08/23/photography-orton-technique/ What I would say is, ignore the 2-3 on the Gaussian Blur, experiment well into double figures!!
January 3rd, 2013
Looks soft. Is that SOOC or did you use a filter for it.
January 3rd, 2013
@jwlynn64 Thanks John. It isn't SOOC, I used the orton technique, see link in previous comment. It accentuates the colours and then you add a Gaussian blur at the end to soften the shot.
January 3rd, 2013
Lol ..... love the commentary!
I gave serious consideration to photographing the traffic and calling it "car .... nation"!! only reason I didn't was that for a change the roads were fairly clear.
I like the processing on this ...... gorgeous reflections too. :)
January 3rd, 2013
Great storry...maybe it is still Carnation, because this is most definitely the result of a quest for the word Carnation!
January 3rd, 2013
oooOOOoooh love it!! What a wonderful sight. Thank goodness they were out of evaporated milk!
January 3rd, 2013
A wonderful, dreamy capture, Sean.
January 3rd, 2013
Seems you're going on Sean. I've taken nothing today and am having a dilemma with 4 hours to make a decision.
January 3rd, 2013
Soft and dreamy and altogether a super shot Sean, very beautifully done.

Oh, this is lovely, Sean. . .so you're just bending the rules a bit! I think I could pass on the Carnation milk anyway. This is truly stunning and because of the EXTRA color, this one is my fav.
January 3rd, 2013
This is stunning too Sean, but I prefer the wild monochrome version.
January 3rd, 2013
Well, this is a great substitution! Fav for me.
January 4th, 2013

"Today's word isn't .....trees" ha ha ha, great little story Sean.
January 4th, 2013
PP!! Hooray!
January 4th, 2013
Beautiful photo and even more beautiful story, I prefer the flowers to the milk though. However a tin of carnation milk does stir up memories of my wonderful grandparents so that's always good :)
January 4th, 2013
My first thought was 'beautiful' then 'I wonder how he did this'...... but have read above comments, so I'm in the know now! Not sure I'd be able to do this in Photoshop, but Ribbet have an Orton preset, so may give that a whirl! Well done on the PP, quite right too!
January 4th, 2013
@jackie8 Easy peasy in PS Jackie. Have you got PS? 2 minute job if you have. Your Tilbury shot would look great methinks!!
January 4th, 2013
@jackie8 Oh, thanks too!!

January 4th, 2013
Gorgeous shot Sean. Ooh you must live in a right posh area if people don't like a bit of evap on their jelly where you live!
January 4th, 2013
@jantan Haha, the opposite, I could have got Co-Op own label, so not posh enough I fear!!!
January 4th, 2013
Nice weather you're having Sean, Orton effect or not.
January 4th, 2013
oh dear! how common!!! ;0)
January 4th, 2013
January 4th, 2013
But seriously Sean. I went out this evening on the (false) assumption that it was going to be a nice sunset and took some trees and floods shots myself but haven't found a way to process them that I am happy with. Might give this Orton effect lark a try later
January 4th, 2013
@jantan Mining village you see!!
January 4th, 2013
great shot - love the edit and the colours are fabulous

January 5th, 2013
Beautiful shot!
January 5th, 2013
A great shot and a fav. I too will try using Orton effect in the coming days. Also a cricket coach and share your dislike of Double Diamond and Vol-au-vents (to many dodgy teas?) lol.
January 5th, 2013
Stunning shot!
January 5th, 2013
This is wonderful! I love the soft focus.

@espyetta Thank you MaryBeth. I will find Carnation soon!!
January 7th, 2013
The blue and gold play off of each other so beautifully, and the colors reflect so nicely on the water. Gorgeous and FAV.
