My mother and father in law joined us for lunch today.
My father in law, John, presented me with two presents when they arrived. This is one of them, an Agfamatic 4000 camera still in its original case. When I looked under the tray I was able to date it as purchased on 10th May 1975, because along with the original guarantee and instructions booklet, was the "Access" credit card slip!
The camera cost £27-00 with £1-00 P+P. In todays money that would be worth somewhere around £100-00. John paid £1-00 for it yesterday at the Hathern Church bric a brac sale!
Here is a link to an interesting little website devoted to Agfa cameras. That such a website exists is heartwarming don't you think?
Now, what would £100-00 buy you nowadays? Two Nikon Coolpix 16.1MP 5 x optical zoom, though obviously the SD card would take you over budget vs the Agfa, which came with a film!
I just have to take some pics with my new toy very soon!! I look forward to John buying vintage Voigtlander, Leica and Rolleiflex for similar sums of money in the near future, he obviously has an eye for these things!!
I had one of those inherited from my Dad, with the optional flash gun add on. It must have been top of the range as it had motor drive. A real luxury in 1984. It took some good pics until I lost it and moved on to 35mm.
@seanoneill I know what you mean..i am afraid to even try the old camera my Dad left me..but i will do it someday and just pray! Someone told me i probably have the last box of film left in the whole world!! :)
A 110 camera, how ... wonderful. ;-) My local camera shop guy is buying up Pentax Auto 110s and seems to be able to shift them too, so maybe there's some life left in this format yet.
@ozziehoffy Maybe. I have just been looking at Voigtlanders on EBay. I would like to have a go at stripping out all the fancy tools and getting back to doing some film work, though it has been nearly 30 years since I last did!! Somewhere in the loft I think I may have my old Chinon SLR that I got for my 21st.
You are a winner girl. A super cool find as 110 cameras are becoming very collectible as a lomography camera. Film can still be purchased online, and has become fashionable as the Lomography company has started making it again last year. Look around and you will find some, and avoid high prices. What sort of batteries does it take? Note to self - go to church fetes
@seanoneill I have a lovely Chinon SLR CM-4S which I bought from a little old lady in the street because the second hand camera shop said they had too many. Think they were really only interested in high end. Takes beautiful photos and the lens which I have posted occasionally. Get it out and use it. My daughter and her boyfriend are using at the moment with a couple of rolls I gave them. They are enjoying being old school and kewl
@peterdegraaff Thanks Peter, I've just ordered red scale colour and B+W film for it, so hope to get out at the weekend with it. I'm going to dig the Chinon out later, I know exactly where it is. I will let you know what model it is.
That's great! That's the camera I always wanted to have when I was a kid. I have one now and although I never use it, I like to hold it from time to time.
@seanoneill Great idea! I just checked my collection and I still have a 110 color film from the 1980s! I only have to find a place that can develop the film for me. I'll ask the local photography shop owner, I'm sure he'll like to help.
@hjv in the UK you can get them developed and have a digitised CD done as well. Let me know when you have a film and we can think of some ideas. Definitely ELT!!
@seanoneill ELT for sure! I've been googling and found several options for getting my film developed. I figured it would be hard, but lomography is doing a lot. Does your camera also have a tele-option and a switch for sunny and cloudy weather? It does have the 'sensor' shutter that they advertised with in the seventies: The sensitive touch guaranteeing to never have camera movement again. I don't have the flash unit but I have a block of flash bulbs.
@seanoneill Did you notice that you have an Agfa camera in the original box and that a Kodak film is packed? That's intriguing! I would have imagined that Agfa would have made 110 film?
Too. Cool. I really need to start looking for old, vintage cameras. My husband picked one up for me last May, but I don't think it was much of a deal at $54. I think I can do much better. :)
