This shot was taken before dawn this morning. The colour version will be in my main album, a square crop will follow sometime soon as well.
Just before this I had dropped off my eldest son Sam at school ahead of the long journey to Jordan. He will be gone for 11 days and will be visiting the Dead Sea, Petra, Jerbash, Mt Nebo, Aqaaba and trekking in the Wadi Rum for 4 days to complete his Duke of Edinburgh Award silver.
A year ago today I dropped him off at school ahead of his trek along the Great Wall of China, and posted the photo linked below. Sam has achieved so much in these last 12 months, he is an inspiration to me, and I learn so much from him. I couldn't be prouder of him.
It is interesting that a dozen of the commentors on the shot from last year are no longer on 365,
Stay safe and well Sam, we will all miss you, and can't wait to hear your tales and see your pictures. (This year I have bought him a new Fuji camera that can stand up to the rigours of the desert!)
Love the spartan quality to this.
Sam is lucky to have you as a dad ; it's a wise parent who realises that s/he learns from the children and happily admits it.
All the very best to Sam for his adventure, looking forward to seeing an image of him with his award.
Hey -- I know those trees and this landscape! It's in my FAV album as a winter scene. Such an identifiably strong image. Beautiful in silhouette, too. Good luck to Sam!
I actually think this is the most striking of the three, I like how the sky gets darker until its almost black as it balances well with the foreground. The curve of the hill also seems to be more emphasised in this. I remember doing my duke of Edinburgh many moons ago, it was Wales not Jordan though!
@hjv We have to make financial sacrifices to allow him to go on the various trips, though interestingly Ben doesn't have the same wanderlust. It is hard letting him go so far away for so long, but it will enrich him, so we are very happy to see him develop in this way.
This is my favourite of the three. I love these minimalist landscapes. The trip to Jordan sounds fantastic. My daughter will be jealous. She did her silver DofE in North Wales in the rain.

Great b&w but in this format I prefer the colour version.
