10-27-11 Good Night Seattle, We Love You

Downtown Seattle from Capitol Hill
(better magnified)

Shot number 365! I spent quite a bit of time trying to decide what I was going to put up for my 365th photo. I have seen a lot of the collages of people’s entire year in photos that I have liked, or perhaps something with the numbers 3, 6 and 5 but in the end I decided that taking a picture that I could not have managed taking at the beginning of the project but have the confidence to attempt now would be most appropriate. A long exposure of the city I live in and have featured so often in the pictures I have posted. Chilly out tonight and the wind was blowing here above the freeway so I was pretty happy to put the tripod away and get into the warm car by the end of my photo shoot. The title of the shot a quote from the TV show Frasier, based in Seattle, the nightly show ender.

I began this project looking to try to re-find some of the joy in my life, to do something for me (not the wife me or the mom me or the employee me – just the me me) and while I am not completely joyous all the time I have found this to be a creative outlet that I sorely needed. It has forced me to look around my world in new ways and to try to push myself in new ways. Of course the different parts of me have overlapped and you have seen my children and other various parts of my life on this site overall I think this was a good thing as it’s impossible to separate all the different sides of me. And I have had some personal successes through this project. I managed to take a shot where the water looked all smoky (wanted to do that forever!) and I had a co-worker ask if she could have one of my photos to display in her home. I have over 150 followers and several photos that have made the PP and I have learned a lot about editing and I have found this community which is so supportive and encouraging and full of creativity. I have met people here (virtually at least) who I consider to be friends and whom I hope that if I am ever in their neck of the woods that I might be able to walk their world with them and should they ever be in mine I hope they would ask to walk my city with me (and perhaps a spot on the couch if they need it).

Thank you to all of you for every word of encouragement, for every fav and for every view even when I have not managed to be a good community member and comment back. And no, I’m not done; I am so used to having my camera with me I can’t imagine not having one with me now. I will begin my second year tomorrow and hope that in this next year I can push myself to learn more and to take more risks. But I will probably not be so rigid in my desire to not use any fillers (one used this past year, and two days where I posted a shot from the day previous that was strikingly similar to one taken on that day that I just liked better) and I hope I make myself get out more often to take photos of things beyond my house and the daily walks I take. But I will continue to tell you where the photo was taken and I will probably keep my edit notes at the bottom, for myself if no one else.

365 ROCKS!

Edit: straighten, crop, sharpen, exp & cont, temp & sat, a little cross process (I think, I did three edits to two shots from tonight)

It seems to have erased my comment! I love and fav this picture and also your sharing. I've particularly enjoyed your photos given my daughter and her family live in Seattle so I feel as if I get a glimpse into their daily life visually. I particularly like this picture with the river of car lights as well as the beautiful blue sky and all the city opening in front of me.

Stunning 365 shot Shannon - sorry I missed the actual day - I have had a busy weekend! love that you posted something outside your zone to show how far you've come - I kind of did the same! Glad you are continuing - i agree it's kind of hard to break the habit! (though my bag is heavy now I'm insisting on carrying my SLR everywhere!!)

Congratulations! How did I miss this?!? I love this picture and the fact that I now see you're doing a second year. I have loved your pictures and stories through this year.
I totally know how you feel about not being able to stop now, although I'm taking it a bit slower now (hence the late comment). And you're always welcome on our couch (or guest-room).

An excellent look at Seattle. Congratulations! Finishing the first year is a huge hurdle. Most people never see the end of it. For those of us who do, we now have the time to sit back, relax, and make the kinds of pictures that we want. The project takes a different turn when we don't feel the pressure we did in the first year.

If you can, think about joining one or more photography groups. Being out with others is fun and gives us a chance to see other things we might not otherwise see. There is no obligation other to go if you rsvp that you will. You can sign up for as many as will work for you. The people are really nice and willing to share information.

This is the one my husband and I really enjoy the most.
