In A Stable, Long Ago

Happy Christmas, from me to each of you!

I know I will be busy so I'm a day early with my wishes. This crèche is my most treasured Christmas decoration. It's very old, huge (takes up a lot of storage space) and I am grateful that my Mom gave it to me years ago. She knew that I would continue the tradition of putting it up every year and I have.

About 67 years ago, when my parents were newlyweds and celebrating their first Christmas together, they had to have a crèche or "manger" as my Mom used to say. So my Dad went out to the woods and cut down the tiniest of branches. He created this wonderful manger (not all is pictured here.)

My mother went out and bought a German wax infant with real hair and little fuzzy lambs. The statues, she painted (again, only a few are pictured.) They had it all blessed.

A few years ago, after my mother had given me the crèche, the trees, the rock paper and all the statues, our home was badly flooded. The box containing the statues was too. When I tearfully removed the statues, expecting them to be broken or covered in mildew, the worst I found was Mary was blue in the face. Her paint had run. Gratitude!
Lovely nativity scene and touching accompanying story!

Keeping traditions doesn't seem to be as important to many in this part of the world. Very busy, hectic lifestyles often get in the way and priorities are different.... Family traditions fade, unfortunately. But, I will try! Thanks.
