Thurlaston Brooke, which flows from the village of Thurlaston, along the shallow valley behind our home, and curves around the back of Croft Hill. With cow-grazed pasture on one side of the Brooke, and the publically accessible wildlife of quarry-managed land on the other, a walk along the valley is green and pleasant, especially at this time of the year when the gravel path ploughs a furrow between grasses growing head high in the damp soil. Eventually this spot is reached, where the dogs can scrabble down the muddy bank for a cooling splash before we climb up the long flight of steps leading up to the quarry edge.
