Is anyone else on this side of the equator urging the sunset to keep creeping later and later? During the Christmas break I have been able to take the dogs out for most of their evening walks while it is still daylight, and found that by leaving no later than 3.34pm I can be walking back up along the field track to the gate onto our Lane while it is still light. On sunny evenings there is that curious phenomenon when the light briefly brightens after the sun has sunk below the horizon, just before dusk descends. Occasionally we are returning “in the gloaming”, when everything glows in the last vestiges of daylight. Over the last couple of days I have noticed that it is still quite light when I return, even on a gloomy foggy evening as we have tonight. This winter’s evening shot was taken when Tia and I decided to head back via Croft Hill (it is always a joint decision). I lay down to try to capture the full height of the trees with the land falling away behind, while Tia ran around me, nose to the ground, investigating that day’s social life of the local rabbit population.
Tomorrow morning, my first early start for a couple of weeks, I will see whether the timing of the sunrise will allow a morning walk in daylight. Whereas the earliest sunset is on 21st December, apparently the latest sunrise is on 31st December. Did you know that?
Nice commentary and accompanying photo. Yes, the extending daylight has been very welcome. I am in East Anglia, just a short hop nearer the Equator than you, so the difference is negligible but yes, the change over the last few days ha seemed quite dramatic.
I leave work at 6PM so I spend probably almost six months driving home in the dark all or most of the way. I know from years of doing this that it will be light at 5pm by the end of this month. I get very excited about it. Lovely layering you have here.
Beautiful sunset. I love the silhouette of the trees against the "glow". Interesting piece of scientific fact that makes no sense to me. Will have to look this up.
At this point of the year, I go to work in the dark and come home in the dark. I am getting very cranky. I hope the days start extending soon or I cannot be held accountable. Lovely silhouette shot.
