Protecting his family......

This pair of swans have come back to Rother Valley Countryside Park and nested next to a tree in the middle of a seating area where 100's of people pass to buy their food from the clear gazebo tent (seen behind the nesting female). This is a water skiing centre, and today there was a championship competition going on. It doesn't bother the swans who are back here to nest for the 4th year. They must think its a good spot. They are pretty tame. I got to within 3 feet of them. The male only got upset when a dog got too close or the ducks tried to go near his nesting partner. If you look closely you will see she has 6 eggs under her.
We stopped at this park yesterday in Rotherham on our way up to Northumberland. I am hoping that the eggs have hatched next week when we pass by again.
Love the shape the shape of the male. He looks like he is dancing. Will be interesting to see the eggs hatch.

Excellent shot of the male. He really is guarding her but what a public place to have a nest

That's crazy! The swans around here will chase you and hiss at you if you get within 50 meters of their territory! Cool shot, not often seen!

Seems like a stressful place to raise a family but if they are back for the 4th year they must find it has some advantages.

Great capture. There are signets on the pond around the corner, Could not get close enough to get a good shot though.

Swans are rather assertive birds, so it's funny to read that they've taken over some high-traffic spot for their nest!

Such an unusual place for a swan nest. Apparently they have complete faith in their size garnering them respect in the neighborhood.
