This was one of the grey seal pups born a couple of days ago at Donna Nook, Lincolnshire.
The pups turn from yellow when born to white within a day or two. They feed from their mums for 18 days then the Cows all go back out to sea after mating with the Bulls. The new foetus stops growing for 100 days and then starts again, ready to be born next November when the cows come back to give birth.
The pups, as I have already said, get abandoned when they are about 18 days old. They get hungry which makes them go out to sea to start feeding for themselves.
I think its all quite amazing. The cows don't eat from the time they come onto the beach until they go back out to sea and in that time they have fed their pups until they are large enough to fend for themselves.
Beautiful capture.. love those eyes. Have just heard to day that the area in Kaikura NZ that was effected by the earthquake .. the seals have returned.. so very pleased about that.
I was wondering where all your pics were and it seems that I had unfollowed you unwittingly. I keep doing it to people accidentally instead of pressing fav, so I apologise massively, it wasn't intentional. Have a HUGE fav for this and it's nice to see you haven't gone anywhere, it was just me being stupid! Lol!
Thank you for you visit, you so nice comment and the fav. Much appreciated.
