Wai-O-Tapu by shepherdmanswife

Wai-O-Tapu

Wai-O-Tapu is an active geothermal area at the southern end of the Okataina Volcanic Centre, just north of the Reporoa caldera, in New Zealand's Taupo Volcanic Zone. It is 27 kilometres south of Rotorua.
Sculptured out of volcanic activity and thousands of years in the making, Wai-O-Tapu Thermal Wonderland is considered to be New Zealand’s most colourful and diverse geothermal sightseeing attraction. You are introduced to a uniquely different natural landscape – the key to what you see lies below the surface – one of the most extensive geothermal systems in New Zealand, extending over 18-sq. km.
I wouldn't have missed this place for anything.

Wonderful colours and lighting here. I have happy memories of our one visit to the Rotorua area over 20 years ago. This brings it all back!

Marvelous photo and story. This area has to be similar to our Yellowstone volcanic caldera, it is 30 miles across.
