NO! You may NOT have my blueberries!

My get pushed challenge this past week was to take a photo of the ugly. Wow! That's hard! I don't go out in search of the ugly. I try to avoid it at all costs! And tho there are times when I feel like all I can see is ugly (like the dead of winter), and there are other times I feel like I can't find anything beautiful, searching out the ugly is much harder than I thought! So it's been an adventure this week to try to see things differently, and I learned two things. First of all, as I was searching for ugly, I found a whole lot of beautiful and have ended up being much more active with my camera this week than I've been lately. Secondly, I found out there was a line between what I was willing to photograph and what I wasn't willing to photograph even when there was beauty to be found in it. Surprising, and yet not. So Joan, I have to thank you for your challenge on more levels than I could have imagined!

Ahhhh.... fresh blueberries! I bet they taste awesome, right off the bush, the bush right there in your own backyard, the one you've labored over, fertilized, pruned, loved ... IF ONLY THE BIRDS WOULD LEAVE SOME FOR US!!!! So this year, dh decided to take matters into his own hands! Years ago when I first started gardening, I wrapped something up (don't remember what) in that netting with the 1" square weave that's supposed to protect your plant from the birds, and a week later found a dead bird that had gotten tangled in it and couldn't escape. Needless to say, the netting was gone immediately and I've never used it since. But we've had this bush for several years and never had the first berry off of it. This year, dh was persistent in trying to convince me, so we came up with the idea of using the mosquito netting that the scouts use at camp. He rolled it up tight at the bottom and secured it all the way around with stakes so nothing could enter and get trapped or tangled. So far, so good. The berries are still there and a few are starting to turn. Who knows? This might be the year!

The neighbors, on the other hand, were just a bit perplexed...

Ugly? Yes. Useful? Hope so!

btw - do you see the peony right next to it?
Smart. Great challenge, too.
