Pinefold

The cone in this pinfold was built by Andy Goldsworthy who is a British artist who collaborates with nature to make his creations. Besides England and Scotland, his work has been created at the North Pole, in Japan, the Australian Outback, in the U.S. and many others. It was built to mark the millennium. He did many other around the area. A pinfold is a small walled area where stray sheep are held until the rightful owner clams them. Here is a link to tell you more about Andy Goldsworth and his work if you are interested. http://www.edenbenchmarks.org.uk/sheepfolds.htm
There should be a plaque to explain this somewhere - probably can't see it from here. Nice strong walls still survive!

Very interesting. Probably a stupid question, but are the walls part of ghe sculpture or is it just the cone in the middle.

@maggiemae @tosee @deborah63 Thank you for taking an interest in and commenting on my picture. Maggie unfortunately there is no plaque of explanation. Debbie, the wall are the wall of the pinfold which was there before the cone was built. They were in bad condition because the pinfolds are not really used now. They were either rebuilt or repaired the same time as the cone was built. This is a quote from the site I put the link to above. 'In 1996 the internationally acclaimed artist Andy Goldsworthy was commissioned by Cumbria County Council to celebrate this “perfect republic of shepherds” with a countywide sculpture project called ‘Sheepfolds’ as part of the UK Year of the Visual Arts. It was my great privilege to take over from Steve Chettle as the manager of the project between 2000 and 2003. At its conclusion Andy Goldsworthy and a team of dry stone wallers, led by local expert Steve Allen, completed nearly 50 Sheepfolds, which as a collective whole, is probably the biggest sculpture in the world'. There is also abother link here to a site that tells you how the cones came about.. http://www.sheepfoldscumbria.co.uk/html/educate/ed01f.htm
P.S. sheepfolds are another name for pinfolds.

I keep learning new things every day on 365 - this is fascinating. I had never heard of pinfords (or sheepfolds) - what an interesting concept it was.

It reminds me of a Pine Cone and a bit like a Bee Hive!! Such craftsmanship to build this and I've never heard of a Pinfold before. Nice thing to have if you find or lose a sheep!! Love learning new things and especially in other countries!!! Thanks for the link and the info!! FAV!
