Came across this unusual stile through a wall the other day. If you look carefully at the wall you can see through this stile you just see another. The second one is right beside an open gate and you can make out the gate hole on the left the gate stoop then the stile. Beyond this is a third one just the same as this and again right beside a field gate. I have never seen stiles like this before. I don't think these are on a public footpath, but they are on a friends farm.
Truly unusual. yes I can see the second one and as you say there is a third. I wonder I they are therefore and lined up to hold a log as a gate? I'm not too familiar with farms and what have you.
@bruni I don't think they are for holding logs as they are in they are in the walls parallel to the gates. There is also the full width of the field between them. They will have been put in on a rout often used by the farmer so he can get from field to field without having to open the gates. I will ask the farmer next time I see him if there is a footpath through the land at this place.
@hermann The stiles are made of moulded concrete and the walls will have been built up to them. Dry stone walling is a very skilled job, around here there are people who make a living of going around farms putting wall gaps up for farmers and constructing new walls around gardens.
