Hiding From Spring Gobbler Hunters

My wife spotted these on her way to work and called me in case I wanted to try and get a picture. There were a couple of toms with their tail feathers all spread out, but there were branches between me and them and the camera kept focusing on the branches. :-(

They are such funny birds. The way they look, and act. I love this time of year when the Toms are putting on a show. Great find, and capture, Skip.

Great capture! Turkeys usually scram when they realize they're being watched but you must know the magic word to keep them in place long enough for a photo.

@lyndemc - They were kind of milling around in this swampy area right off the road. Knowing they had keen eyesight I remained in the car and shot out the driver's window. I have read that turkey's eyesight is 3 times greater than 20/20 and in addition to their excellent visual acuity, turkeys also have awesome peripheral vision. Tom’s laterally positioned eyes give him a broader field of view. He has an approximate visual field of 270 degrees around them.

@bill_fe - Just the opposite Bill. I was shooting across a road and was using all of my 55-250mm lens.

I'm faving this, Skip, because I know how difficult it is to get a decent shot of one turkey, let alone a bunch! Nice capture!
