It was a gorgeous Palm Sunday. My wife and I went for a walk at Buhl Park. It was getting close to dusk, when she spotted a large bird circling Lake Julia. I took a number of shots but, I couldn't tell what is was since I was shooting towards the sun. It did catch a fish but, all of the photos after the catch were blurry.
Beautiful wingspan with the light from behind. I'm not sure what lens you are using but I know, with my telephoto, I can get decent shots in full daylight but as soon as dusk starts approaching the quality decreases greatly. It seems the lens really needs full light and any drop-off from that makes it next to impossible to get shots with good detail.
@rjb71 - The lake as it is called is more of a large pond. The osprey kept circling and so it would fly right over our heads. I had my 600mm lens with me which I was using all of it. This shot I cropped to fill the frame.
@gardencat - I have a Tamron 150-600mm G2 lens. It's largest opening is 5.6 @150mm and 6.3 at 600mm. That isn't a lot of light if it isn't sunny. It normally does quite well with birds at the feeder, but it was giving me fits trying to capture the circling bird. The sun was behind the bird and was interfering with the camera settings. The shots looked like silhouettes on the canera's screen. I couldn't tell that it was an osprey until I got home and looked at them on the monitor and used Lightroom to bring out the details.
Fabulous capture! Amazing wing span! We spend the summers at Lake Winnipeg in Canada and every year there are several osprey nests in the area. I have only been able to get a shot of them in the nest, not flying. :-)
