This girl was sitting on our dining room window so I used my new macro lens to capture her. I wish the DoF was a little better.
Just behind the wings, attached to the body, are two small, antennae-like appendages called halteres. These function like gyroscopes during the crane fly's weak and wavering flights. This is probably a female as it has the pointed tip on its tail for egg depositing.
