Waiting . . . by skipt07

Waiting . . .

On June 25th at 8:30 am, my wife and I entered UPMC Horizon Hospital. The long-anticipated event had arrived. My wife was about to have her right knee replaced. Originally she wanted to have it done last Fall, but our daughter thought she was going to have hip replacement surgery. So, my wife held off to help our daughter through her recovery. Then our daughter's doctor changed his mind and decided that she should wait before having surgery. My wife was then scheduled for surgery on April 21 which was canceled due to the COVID-19 outbreak.
It was a long and trying day! The waiting room was very sparse also due to Coronavirus limitations.
Hope all went well with the surgery. My husband has had both knees replaced and has gone really brilliantly, although if anyone asked him in the first ten days whether he would have the second op he would have said definitely NO, however, once he got moving on number one knee he couldn't wait for number two. I hope your wife has the same experience. Just tell her to religiously do all the exercises!

Send her my best wishes... and stop worrying - she's in good hands.

Hope she gets on really well Skip. Mine was cancelled at the last minute in January, then the pandemic started. I have no idea when it will take place.

Good luck to Mrs. Tribby for a speedy recovery.

What a trial. I hope you got to spend the time with her and that she recovers quickly.

Oh gosh, such a tough time to be going through this. Hoping all went well.

Oh my...Best wishes and take care.

Wishing her heartily well with the surgery and recovery. Not a great time to be having such things, but then again if it eases the pain and restores mobility, it is an absolute godsend.

Thank you all so much for all your kind words, well wishes and encouraging words!
I showed them to my wife and she was touched to see that they were coming from so many all around the world.

She was particularly encouraged by yours relating your husband's ordeal Judith! When all you feel is pain, it is reassuring that it WILL pass one day especially when it is coming from someone who has experienced it!
I can not express how much this means to me! Especially in light of all the riots, protests, anger, and hate that has been going on.

@skipt07 Just checking in you, dear ones. Praying as I type for God to help you both in all you need and especially your lady wife. Warmest love to you both today.

@casablanca - Thank you very much for your prayers and kind thoughts. She is doing really well, but the first 10-14 days are really hard, My wife has a high pain threshold but this is pushing her to the limits. It is through times such as these that your faith in God is tested and strengthened!
Knowing that people are praying for you is an encouragement! ❀️️

@skipt07 Any time. I had spinal surgery 12 years ago so I heartily sympathise. Regular painkillers at first is essential. Your body heals while the pain is suppressed by the meds, it really helps. I will keep her in my prayers and you too - hard to watch someone you love struggling. Hang in there, when she is healed and strengthened she will be so so much better.

@casablanca - Our youngest daughter had scoliosis surgery when she was in high school. So, I can empathize with you. She did remarkably well. We were amazed by how God orchestrated everything and saw us through that!

@skipt07 And He will again. Glad your daughter did really well. I had a friend at college who had that same op when she was 18. Took a lot of work but she recovered well. He's got you and knows what you need - isn't that a most marvellous thought? Cheering her on.

Hope all goes well, everything is on the back burner here too. I was due a shoulder replacement during lockdown but it was cancelled, I haven't heard anything yet but my sister has heard about her hip replacement now rescheduled for September, so hopefully soon. It’s nice to see a quiet waiting area at least. I wish your wife a speedy recovery, I’ve had both mine replaced successfully.

I had my right knee replaced last July and I am so glad I did! I will be having the left knee replaced in September if all goes well. I looked into many options but the replacement was the most practical. I did everything they recommended and my recovery was almost exactly what they said it would be like so that was a blessing! I come up on my first "anniversary" next week and with the exception of rainy days, I'm pretty much pain free in that knee and able to move 10 times better than before surgery. I'm looking forward to the second one- not for the initial pain- but what I hope to be the ability to walk longer and further than before after it's done. My prayers will be with your wife as she recovers! And let her know it's fun to show off the "war wounds" to fellow knee replacement patients!

@craftymeg - Thank you Margaret. She is progressing well but, other things are happening that the doctor didn't mention nor have we heard others relate having these issues.
I hope they get you scheduled soon so you can get beyond the continual discomfort from a bad shoulder!

@olivetreeann - I remember years ago you heard a lot about people having bypass surgery. Now it's hips and knees.
As far as the knee goes she is really doing well, but now she is getting pain in her hip.
Her therapist say it is because her gait has changed. No one ever mentioned that possibly happening nor had anyone we know that has had knee surgery mentioned it.
We don't know if that is because it is rare for that to happen?
I met a woman in her 80s by chance and they did both knees at the same time. Since then a friend of ours sister had both knees done at the same time. That is unbelievable.
My wife also has done everything they told her to do before and after the surgery.
I have taken her to our chiropractor twice to see if he could suggest anything she could do to calm those muscles and tendons it her hip to quiet down. There doesn't seem to be much to do other than massage around her hip and her upper leg to get the muscles to relax.
I hope your second surgery goes as well as the first one.

@skipt07 That's interesting about the hip- as that has caused me some trouble too. But I think mine is due to a car accident that I was in. One thing I heard frequently from other people who had this surgery was there are several points in the healing process where you really notice a change- 3 mos., 6 mos. and a year. My changes happened at 4 mos. and 7 mos. Next week will be a year and I'm thinking if my pattern continues I'll see a significant change at a year and a month. But having the left knee as bad as it is has really impressed upon me how well the right knee is doing! I hope your wife continues to see improvement. The physical therapists should help to correct some of the pain she's experiencing from the new gait. I met two people who both knees done at the same time and they said, "I must have been crazy!!". That's why I didn't do both of mine at once even though I could have.
