@caroleb I can only say visit Avebury - I love it - one of my favourite places on the planet and close to other archaelogical treasures such as Silbury Hill and the West Kennet Long Barrow. It has a wonderful ambience partciularly early in the morning or late in the evening. Stonehenge, because of it's location (between 3 busy roads), it's inaccessibility (you can't actually get to it) and the number of tourists just make it a poor experience IMHO.
