"Lets go surfin now
Everybody's learning how
Come on and safari with me
Early in the morning we'll be startin out
Some honeys will be coming along
Were loading up our woody
With our boards inside
And headin out singing our song..."
Surfin' Safari was released as a single by the Beach Boys in 1962 and quickly charted. It perfectly captured the mood of Southern California surf culture and struck a chord with young people all over America.
This is the woody that the Beach Boys were singing about - a 1949 Ford Woody. These wooden clad station wagons from the 1940's become insanely popular with surfers in the early 1960's. Woodys today are very popular with collectors and are worth as much as a nice house. The cost to restore the wood is astronomical.
The woody in this image is part of my personal collection of highly detailed scale models. The body of this model is made of heavy gauge metal and real wood. The model is quite heavy and substantial.
Fabulous car Danny..... We actually saw an old Woody with the original Old Woody Surfer still driving his car. He was still surfing - in his late 60's. Still with his board inside the car....
