happy hopper

I got my new macro today and rushed out to try it when I got home. I thought I'd experiment on the aphids on my little rose bush, but saw this little guy on them instead. I don't have the lens dialed in yet, but can tell I'm going to have a lot of fun learning to use it!
Nice focus and dof. Any idea what he is?

Macro is great fun! But it's also very frustrating. Looks like his back leg is in focus, while the body is a hair out of focus. I have a tendency to use smaller apertures when shooting macros, f9 is fine for most things but I'll use f11 - f16 or smaller when I can, depending when shooting macro. A flash also helps, though I tend not to use one (a case of "do what I say, not what I do"?!). But it's a good start. I've seen these before, are they some type of katydid? I've never known.

Nicely done. Really like the contrast of the bug's coloring with all the pink.

Karen - I'm assuming it's a variety of tiny cricket, he had a pretty good sized hop going on for a bit there...

Harriet - thank you for the feedback. I agree with your comments and realize what a very touchy focus point this new lens has. Hoping to capture future subjects with a better dof.

JP - I tried to upload my b&w entry last night but the site was having coronaries or something...finally gave up after it taking an hour just to upload this one. Finally got it to load this morning... :-/

Everyone - thank you so much for your warm and wonderful comments on my first macro capture. I'm pretty happy with the new lens and will most likely be flooding my album with more of these soon enough... :-)

Wow Patty. Amazing capture. Beautiful detail, dof and color. If this is your first shot on the new macro, can't wait to see what you come up with. Oh...and I wanted to thank you for your comment on my Polar Bear shot. I had to re-upload it and your comment got erased in the process. Sorry about that.
