OK, admittedly, Street Photography is not one of my strengths...I spent several hours on Sunday at my local Street Fair, and in the end, this was my best shot.
A jazz guitarist, warming up before his band went on to play. I also played a bit with Picmonkey to help make this one a bit more interesting...
Street Photography entry for the One Night Stand challenge
One of the things I like about 365 is the way it gets us to experiment outside our comfort zone. So glad you didn't use a filler. This is part of your photographic journey. I ran across an online photography seminar and the teacher was making a distinction between "studium" and "punctum" in photography. Studium is the photograph we make that is "right" (or mostly right) in all those technical ways--good composition, lighting, focus, etc--this is most of what most of us do day to day. It is necessary. It is like a golfer practicing a shot day after day, getting ready for the decisive moment when that shot is really needed. Punctum is the "wow" factor in a photograph--that photo that rises to the next level. That is a very helpful distinction to me. I think this is a very good photograph--good composition, lighting, and interesting processing. It may be a "studium" photograph, but that is a good thing.
I like it, and like you said, out of our comfort zones and strengths. This has been an interesting challenge to participate in. @billjohnson Good thoughts. Bill. I will keep those in mind. But I want punctum every day. :)
Oh, I think it is great. And, I for one am still trying to get out of my zone. None of this is very comfortable for me, but it's so intimidating for me. This one is GREAT.
Bill, I actually did debate about the whole "filler" thing for this particular challenge, but in the end decided to show what I shot anyway. I chose to do this challenge so that it would...well...challenge me! I've learned nothing from it, if I cop out and put something non-related and better in its place. Your words make a lot of sense to me, and I have to agree whole heartedly with them. I'm trying to better my skills in photography, and in order to do that, must touch on all areas, not just the ones that I'm comfortable in.
I'm please with my growth so far, and know that I wouldn't have grown as much as I have, if it weren't for the encouragement and good advice of its members.
Thank you so much for taking the time to comment with substance, I really do appreciate it.
Patty, I see here a very atmospheric shot with movement and a beautiful editing, well done. I agree to Ron. @ronphotos365
Bill! I enjoy your thoughts! @billjohnson
I really like this shot. I'm like you, one of my main goals when I started this 365 project was to try new things. As you pointed out, you don't learn half as much if you don't work at new things.
@billjohnson Good thoughts. Bill. I will keep those in mind. But I want punctum every day. :)
