I've had a bizzare kind of a day. Great journey up to Nottingham this morning and a really productive meeting. As I came out of the offices I noticed this fire escape on some buildings opposite. So, doing as we do, I pulled the car over and jumped out and started to snap (with my P&S). Next thing I know I'm being almost rugby tackled to the ground by a lady shouting "what do you think you're doing, I'm with security, what are you doing??". Completely bemused (and frankly expecting a SWAT team to jump out from behind the bush and cover me in red lazer spots) I said "i'm doing a project and I liked the shadows..."!! Apparently I should've asked before stopping my car and photographing a building that was a good 400 yards away!! The experience left me a bit edgy for the rest of the evening.
Well if you will photograph GCHQ.... Like the shot very much - worth the trauma! Being a security guard has to be VERY boring indeed unless you have unsuspecting photographers to pounce on.
Love the shadows Juliette , great composition and nice B/W too. As for the security guard, Nottingham is a tough old East Midlands city , maybe the securuty guard was a tad worried about your safety.
When I first saw the image I thought it was the Pork farms building in Nottingham, rather than Experian. The Experian HQ on the NG2 park is very impressive a night ..all blue and smoked glass !
super shot and haha.. sounds all too familiar to me having been stopped a few times... if you've time, stick to your guns and balls it out... bloody security guard and their jumped up power trips...
Wow, I'm always afraid something like that will happen to me! I've had a couple of police cars drive by when I'm photgraphing businesses, and I always feel like they're going to stop and ask me questions although they haven't yet. I am glad you got a GREAT photo out of the experience!
How did I miss this photo. WOW The shadow, the construction and the entire composition of the piece is astoundingly beautiful. Well done and very very lovely to look at.
It's a great photo and I've faved it for that as well as your bureaucratic ordeal :)
In Australia, as with the US, you can take a photograph of anything you can see from a public space as long as you remain in a public space. If it's the DSD or NSA buildings (GCHQ equivalent) then you can snap them from the road. I know the UK is just starting to relax its ridiculous lawset governing (among other things) photography in public but I'm not entirely sure what stage it's at. I would have turned the camera on the security witch and asked for her name...but that's how I roll ;)
There was a debate some time back about the legality of building shots - worth checking it out. I think you were perfectly within your right and these shadows are fabulous so two fingers to the over zealous security lady ...although I would have probably asked if she thought I'd got the right angle:-)
Fabulous capture! I immediately thought of Watson and Crick because of the combined shadow and stair double helix. Great composition and very effective as BW. Fav
Well this was definitely worth the effort despite your run-in with security! Awesome color, composition, light and shadow! It seems more and more places are having issues with cameras....we just have to learn to be more stealthy! :)
Beautiful...love the shadows. Definitely worth the hassle I would say. Isnt it ridiculous though? I expect the local security on the base the stop me everytime I go out with my camera (its an EX-army base, but they still have their little security guards...) :)
Great symmetry with the shadows , and I like the caption too. This reminds me of a time I was with a friend recently and we were photographing a village. Some one came out of one of the houses all huffy and said to her, "What do you think you're doing?" as if she was a soviet spy or a burglar or something. I took a photo of a tractor, we need new tractor designs in Siberia, just don't tell anyone. ;)
I must confess I had a little chuckle at your telling of the rugby tackling security lady! :)

I love the shadows as well. Personally, I think a bit of risk is part of the fun.
a fave

Hope you have got over your ordeal.
