Oblivious

Somehow I managed to wake up before the alarm this morning and getting up and out wasn't as painful as I'd expected! Was first into the office by about an hour so cracked on with things - a few meetings and on with plans for the next few weeks. Finished my last meeting a little late and wanted to get home to the gym so rolled off a couple of shots on the underground. These 2 were stood deep in conversation whilst the commuting world skirted around them. Went to the gym, did a 20km bike ride and then attempted my first "brick" which is the transition between disciplines; off the bike and straight into running. I managed 1km but my legs felt like lead. Got a feeling there'll be some muscle grumbling tomorrow!! This for the One Night Stand challenge of black & white.
LOVE this - such a ghostly feel to the crowd. fabulous!

Great shot. I've just been get-pushed to do street photography but I find it really difficult as I feel so conspicuous taking pictures of strangers. When I see things like this though I can see why it's worth it.

@julz @andysg @jodimuli @kwind @gooner46 @anwan @sharonaddison @espyetta @squamloon

in response to all your great comments - a quick summary of what I do to get this type of shot...I always scan a location for people that are obviously not moving - normally it'll be someone with a map, texting on their phone, often deep in conversation with someone else or on the phone. Never with a tripod as mostly I find that a longer than 2 second exposure gives an overly ghosted effect (you'll find just a foot or an arm in the shot with no body!!). My normal setting on my camera is AV and depending on the light you want, change the aperture to a high number until the timing sets itself to between 0.5 seconds (as this shot is) and 1.5 seconds. Adjusting the f/ will give you different timings and therefore change the level of blur you want. Make sure that your ISO is off auto and set somewhere between 100and 600 depending again on the brightness of the area. The brighter the area the lower the ISO number needs to be. That's about it really - it's a bit trial and error but the more you do it, the more you'll get a feel for the aperture setting and ISO setting you need for the lighting. I'm hoping for a neutral density filter for my birthday where I can do this a bit more consistently using fully manual settings.
As a note to this shot - I did post process it by putting a layer of blur across the scene and erased the blur off the subjects just to help them pop a little as the focus wasn't as sharp as I would've liked.
Hope this helps a little - please ask me any other questions you may have, happy to help!
Another alternative shot this way http://365project.org/sparkle/365/2012-10-17 you'll notice from the exif that I had to put the ISO very high and the f/ high because I was shooting in very low light conditions
posted January 10th, 2013
@sparkle THANK YOU for all this info! I will save it for use later.... :0)
posted January 10th, 2013
As will I! Only 10 days into the project, and already I've gained so much.
posted January 10th, 2013
Thanks for the instructions. I'm shocked that you successfully hand-held it at 1/2 second exposure, but then I do think my hands are a bit shakier than others'.
