Get pushed challenge 157 - black and white still life

This pot plant has sat on my kitchen window sill for months now and I have been meaning to photograph it, so I was really pleased to get this challenge from Brigette as a reason to finally do it! :) It was such a hard plant to photograph though as it is extremely leafy and I have had to crop the picture quite hard to try and get some sort of composition. My other problem was that I have so much clutter everywhere in my house that there was nowhere to put the plant without something else being in view! In the end I put it on the corner of my dining table and opened the patio door - the curtain didn't make a good back drop and the patio door has a bird sticker on it to stop birds flying into the glass! In opening the door I ended up with some bokeh from light shining out between the trees.

Converting the picture to black and white was another challenge! I love looking at black and white pictures but I know they take a lot of skill and work to get the colours, shadows and tones right. I don't have that experience nor the technical knowledge to do it properly, but I found a web site that was pretty helpful - http://www.photoshopessentials.com/photo-editing/black-and-white/black-and-white-intro/ and spent an interesting Sunday afternoon trying out the different methods. I have to say that I actually like the end result alot. I think it looks quite pretty in a black and white way.
Hi @brigette Hope this ok...
